Chapter

Twenty-One

Zoran

Millennia was just as striking as I remembered her to be, but her beauty left me cold. Her dark eyebrow arched up when she saw me, but she didn’t recoil from my anger. She never had.

“How long has it been, Zoran?”

I steeled myself to the sound of her purring my name as old emotions swirled inside me. “Not long enough.”

Instead of being offended by my sharp words, the Drexian threw her head back and laughed as if I’d just amused her greatly. I didn’t dare look at Noora, but I could tell that her head was shifting back and forth between us as if watching a Zephyrball match.

“You always know how to make a female feel welcome,” Millennia finally said when she’d stopped laughing. She turned her bright smile to Noora. “I was just getting to know your new bride.” Then she pinned me with a surprisingly pointed gaze. “I had no idea you were looking for a new wife.”

“I wasn’t,” I said, before thinking better of it. I didn’t want to engage the master’s wife any more than was absolutely necessary, or let her get under my skin like she tended to do.

Millennia rose and stepped closer to Noora, allowing her gaze to travel up and down the human like a predator sizing up her prey. “Don’t tell me this is about fulfilling a contract for your clan. I know you will do just about anything for House Vorran, but I thought you learned from your first mistake.”

I clenched my teeth to keep biting words from spilling forth. Millennia knew all the mistakes were not mine, and she knew more intimately than just about anyone. Why had she come here? Was she truly so curious to see Noora that she traveled from her estate to get a glimpse of the mate who would replace her best friend? Or was her visit a threat? Did she intend to enact the revenge she was so convinced I deserved?

“You are correct that I made mistakes, but I was not alone in that.”

Millennia’s eyes flashed with rage, and for the first time her polished demeanor slipped away, revealing the viper beneath. “Not everyone paid equally for their mistakes, did they?”

I stole a glance at Noora, who looked confused and scared. Guilt was like a knife to my gut as I realized just what a twisted web of intrigue I’d pulled her into. She knew nothing of my past, but I feared she would be punished for it.

Then the knife twisted as I locked my gaze on Millennia again. There wasn’t anyone at the academy I could think of who wished me dead, but the master’s wife was an infrequent visitor who had always been given free rein and a wide berth. And she did despise me. If she wished to orchestrate poison ending up in my glass, there would certainly be servants who would unwittingly do her bidding.

I took a step closer to the female. Even though she was Drexian, she was still shorter than me and had to tilt her head back to continue holding my gaze.
